morning routine for entrepreneurs

A consistent yet flexible morning routine for entrepreneurs can increase creativity and boost the productivity needed to perform under stress. In this piece, we will look into 12 points on making a morning routine best for you.

“You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.”  – John C. Maxwell

Why Do I Need A Morning Routine?

Entrepreneurs need to focus on their work, and it is no easy task. Clearing everything out of the daily hustle and staying sharp is the goal of an entrepreneur who seeks to give 110% to their work. That is the reason why Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook CEO, chooses to wear the same attire to work every day.

“I really want to clear my life to make it so that I have to make as few decisions as possible about anything except how to best serve this community.”

An entrepreneur’s life is full of stress, and a morning routine for entrepreneurs can do wonders. It is a way to declutter each day, remove surprises, and to stay on top of everything.

A good morning routine for entrepreneurs realizes that life is not all about work and accounts for other aspects like family, health, diet, and more.

1- Make A Schedule

The first step for designing a morning routine for entrepreneurs is making a schedule. Your schedule needs to be dynamic and responsive to change. I suggest having a plan and a task list.

The schedule should account for any fixed items like exercise, breakfast, commute, etc. and establish a working and break times. Now what you do on each day is fluid due to the changing nature of your responsibilities. That is why we need to have a task list that might change daily. Each task goes into the predetermined slots in your schedule.

“Time management is all about distinguishing between what is important for you and what simply lures you into useless activities.” – Dr. Prem Jagyasi

2- Write The Tasks Down

A morning routine for entrepreneurs begins the night before. Write down a list of the tasks you have to do tomorrow the night before. Doing so gives you control over the pace of the day. Your mind has enough time to absorb the information and plan for tomorrow. The next morning you will wake up ready to begin the day, in control and stress-free. You have made a schedule that shows there is enough time to do everything, and now you can just focus on the task at hand.

It is a good practice to include the priority level of the tasks and try to get the most important ones out of the way as early as possible.

“In order to build any structure, we should keep a close tab on its daily, weekly, and monthly progress. Unless we religiously follow all the steps, chances are that the structure will not meet our expectations.” – Dr. Prem Jagyasi

3- Get A Good Night’s Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential if you want to have a fabulous day. Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, deems rest to be of extreme importance. He claims that no amount of worry in the world would keep him from sleep:

“What keeps me awake at night? Nothing! If I don’t sleep well, the problem will still be there. If I sleep, I have a better chance to fight it.” – Jack Ma; Speaking in World Economic Forum Annual Meeting

Just the right amount of sleep refreshes your brain and enables you to be more creative. Sleep enough, and you might get more than you have bargained.  Larry Page, co-founders of Google, has stated that the inspiration for Google came to him in his sleep. When he was 22 years old, Page had an epiphany in a dream which developed into the first concept of Google search engine.

To have a healthy sleep routine, you should set the mood before going to bed. Richard Branson, the founder of the Virgin Group, suggests “switching off from the digital world for a while before going to sleep”.

4- Rise Early

I cannot stress enough the positive impact of early rising. Get up early, and you will be bestowed with the gift of time. Do not underestimate the power of a freshly rested brain in the calm hours of early morning. The USA Today reports that Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple Inc., wakes up as early as 3:45 am. each morning. Well, if you are not willing to do the extreme, maybe you should try 5 am. instead. There is a whole 5 am. club out there dedicating an hour each morning for improving skills and learning.

“Wake up early and tackle the day before it tackles you. Be on offense, not defense.” – Evan Carmichael

5- Stay Positive

The way you wake up sets the tone for the day. With enough sleep, you would be able to wake up each morning naturally, without the assistance of an alarm clock, just like Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon. If you have to use an alarm, try one with a gradual volume rising option and choose a sound with minimum stress inducement.

Now that you have woken up, what is the first thing that you should do? It definitely should not be thinking about your problems. In a CNBC interview, Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s chief executive officer, declared that the very first thing he does in the morning is asking himself what he is thankful for.

You need to stay calm and focused on being able to do what you do best. Every morning routine for entrepreneurs aims at reducing stress. Richard Branson has a different method of reducing stress. He practices yoga and Thai Chi to deal with his outrageous lifestyle and to stay focused.

6- Avoid Your Phone

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple Inc., receives about 800 emails a day, which he reads through in the mornings, but this is his job. When Mark Zuckerberg, the  Facebook CEO, wakes up, he instantly picks up his phone to check Facebook, and new messages in Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. In a sense, this also is part of his job.

For the rest of us, picking up the phone first thing in the morning would be nothing but a waste of time and focus. During the work hours, the phone would be a significant distraction, and its use must be limited. Try setting aside some decided periods each day for catching up with social media and watching cat videos (my favorite). Fo the rest of the day, avoid your phone like your life depends on it.

“Put down your cell phones, put everything away, and feel your blood pulsing in you, feel your creative impulse, feel your own spirit, your heart, your mind. Feel the joy of being alive and free.” – Patti Smith

7- Exercise

The morning routine for entrepreneurs must include regular exercise. As an entrepreneur, you have to sit behind desks, read in awkward neck positions, and endure a considerable amount of stress. That would take its toll on the body. Exercising is how you fight for your health and defend your body and life quality. Do not think of exercise as time lost, but rather a means to ensure your longevity and life quality.

Look at any entrepreneur, and you would see them exercising religiously. Tim Cook goes to the gym at around 5 in the morning to get mentally and bodily sharp for his heavy responsibilities. Running every morning is among the activities in Satya Nadella’s daily routines, according to CNBC. The examples are not scarce.

“When it comes to health and well-being, regular exercise is about as close to a magic potion as you can get.” – Tich Nhat Hanh

9- Eat A Healthy Breakfast

Numerous studies have shown how skipping breakfast harms the brain and lowers the metabolism. Consuming healthy ingredients can sustain the massive energy needed for playing an A-game, and we should consider it as an essential part of the Morning Routine For Entrepreneurs.

Richard Branson eats breakfast with his family every day: “Not only does this help them know how important they are to me, but it also grounds me before I start my day,” says Branson.

“The little energy you obtained from your breakfast can ignite your willingness to kick start. Don’t overlook the little energy you have now by fixing eyes on a supposed magical influence farther away!” – Israelmore Ayivor

10- Get Some Sunlight

Getting sunlight in the early morning calibrates your biological clock and wakes you up. The rat race has made it pretty challenging to get enough sunlight on a daily bases. Set aside some time for a quick stroll to bask in the sunlight and breathe the fresh air. It is suitable for your health as well as being a refreshing break from work.

“Sunlight helps boost a chemical in your brain called serotonin, and that can give you more energy and help keep you calm, positive, and focused. Doctors sometimes treat the seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and other types of depression linked to low levels of serotonin with natural or artificial light.” – WebMD

11- Hydrate

Getting enough water is essential for your health and mental performance. It is easy to forget about water when you are a busy entrepreneur. Drink two glasses of water in the morning and take proper amounts of water.

Having a water bottle on your desk gives you something to do when you feel tired. Just sip some water and power through. The refreshing feel of water restores your energy to keep on working. Just take a look at this article about how water helps you be better.

12- Reflect

It is easy to get lost in the constant work. Reflect on your activities. Do some brainstorming and let your creativity take over.

Also, set aside some time at the end of the day to reflect on your morning ritual. How effective was it? What mistakes should you be avoiding tomorrow?

Making a suitable morning routine for entrepreneurs takes time and deliberation. It is all about enhancing your efficiency by playing to your strength and adapting with difficulties. If you cannot focus for more than a few minutes, start where you are and try gradually improving your performance daily.
